Subject: 10kw/12kw Standby home generator

Message: I purchased a Briggs & Stratton 10kw/12kw standby generator on September 29, 2004 after a severe hurricane here in Gainesville Florida.

I am a 80yr. old man with several health issues and having power for my home is essential to my well being , hence the purchase of a standby generator.

I have serviced this unit as indicated by Briggs & Stratton over the past 11 years , but unfortunately , I noticed that the Fault Detection System was indicating a #6 problem which was Engine Overspeed .

I contacted a generator repair service and was informed by the tech who came out to service this unit , that the Governor was defective and had to be replaced .

He also stated that with the low amount of hours ( 167hrs.) on the unit

that it was most likely a manufacturers defect that had caused this problem , but that it was well beyond the warranty , the price would be between $700 and $800 parts , shipping and labor or would be between $1400 and $1500 plus shipping and labor to replace the engine.

Since the purchase of the standby unit , the only hours that was used

was for the weekly Exercise timer of 20 minutes each , and never had

to be run for a long period of time .

Standby to me , indicated that power would be available if and when

I could no longer receive it from my power company , wether it was

in five years , ten years etc .

This unit cost me in excess of $6,000.00 to ship and install , which

was more than I really could afford , but deemed it a necessity and not a luxury , but now ,the cost of having to replace the engine , that is no longer a possibility since I have a very limited income to live on for food and medications .

I would like Briggs and Stratton to replace the parts and labor needed to repair my 10kw/12kw Stand By at no cost due to the low hours on the unit.

I spoke to Jeff Yancy at power Distributors who suggested that I contact

Briggs and Stratton directly , which I had done , and was told that they would get back to me shortly , but have not done so as yet.

Reason of review: Damaged or defective.

Location: Lady Lake, Florida

This is a copy of an email I sent to Briggs & Stratton on August 25. I have since sent them 10 more emails and the only responses I've gotten from them is that my case had been escalated.

They have opened 4 cases for my issue and have still done nothing.

I paid $6000 for the generator, which was my second one after having the 1st one for 10 years. I am still battling with them and with their contractor who sold it to me and installed it!
